Partners in International Living Workshop

The Partners in International Living Workshop is specifically designed for couples who are living or working internationally on an expatriate assignment outside their home country.  This workshop examines a typical international assignment for a couple and their family as comprising of six stages:

  • Preparing to Launch
  • Co-creating a New Life in a Foreign Land
  • Adjusting to a New Culture
  • Being at Home in a Foreign Country
  • Completing Expatriation
  • Coming Home.

In each of these stages of an international assignment, couples can experience specific dilemmas that are unique to that stage. For instance, in the first stage, being aligned around the choice to move or not can make a significant difference in the success of the international experience for both parties. Understanding the unique challenges of repatriation can help the couple transition back to their country of origin in the last stage.

The opportunity of living and working internationally requires couples to be both resourceful and resilient in meeting these challenges. It is an extraordinary opportunity for couples to co-create their life together. Such a partnership takes commitment, alignment, understanding, courage and an appreciation of each other.

Specifically, for couples that are interested in living abroad, the importance of jointly making the choice to accept an assignment or not, being explicit about their values and what is important to them, sharing a vision for their life together, working out agreements with each other and being in partnership around the practical aspects of their international move cannot be understated.

Participants in this workshop will leave with concrete tools and practical exercises that will help them to create a fulfilling partnership with their spouse on their international journey. Examples of such tools include, but are not limited to, an exercise on how to make a powerful choice together, a values clarification exercise, a visioning tool, a perspectives shifting exercise and a tool for creating projects that call for cooperation and committed action.
